Fix Up Look Sharp

An exciting exhibition comprising four of Ireland’s newest and freshest designers, all of whom have just flown the NCAD nest and are becoming a driving force behind a stimulating and contemporary interpretation of Irish craft, is opening next Monday at Project 51.

The exhibition will include a diverse range of glass and metalwork from artists Anna West, Charlene McFarland, Conor O’Toole and Muireann Walshe, all of whom you may recognize from the very successful exhibition that was N.ew C.ats A.nd D.ogs as part of the Kilkenny Arts Festival in August of this year.

Anna West, who prefers to work only with recycled materials, will be exhibiting some of her vibrant, eye catching tapestries, composed of woven, melted and manipulated plastics and copper. Her painterly wall hangings display a unique, avant-garde approach to weave. Charlene McFarland has taken a brave and rarely attempted approach to glass, combining blown tubular shaped glass with vintage car components to create playful and animated structures that will tickle your imagination. Conor O’Toole’s work is both sophisticated and elegant. His menswear breaks boundaries in both the craft and fashion fields. Each of his ‘armour’ vests is composed of over 1000 small sections of glass, creating a new and stimulating visual experience. You may already be familiar with Jeweller Muireann Walshe. Having been awarded the Future Makers Student Award from the Crafts Council earlier this year, Muireann has been enjoying a most successful career ever since. Her ultramodern kaleidoscopic Tara Brooches pay tribute to one of Ireland’s most iconic artifacts in a decidedly alluring and effective way.

The exhibition will be open to the public in the new Irish Designer Collective store, Project 51, located at 51 South William St., Dublin 2 from Monday 10^th– 28^th October with the Official Opening taking place on Thursday 13^th from 7 till 9.
